Hi, this is Nichole. So I have reached the end of my 4th and final mission trip with the Trinity UMC youth group.  I'm not really sure where to start or how I could possibly put into words all that has happened and all that I learned, but I guess I will start by describing this year's mission trip and the impact it had on me. Each one of my mission trips has been spent with Adventure Serve and each one has been different and has stood out to me in its own way. This year, we did a home repair trip and I was on the team that did flooring and dry wall in the basement of the girls' cabin. In all honesty, when I found out that I was going to be working on this project I was a little disappointed because I wanted to be on the group that traveled offsite and got to meet and interact with other people. However, as the week went on, I became grateful that I was placed on that work team. From day 1, our team encouraged each other in everything. Whether it was when we had to take out floor boards and hammer them in because we had the wrong measurements, or when realized our strategy was not working, our team never gave up and never stoped pushing through each challenge that came our way. Even in moments where confusion and frustration took over, we found ways to laugh and make light of the situation. From belting out random songs to trying to turn the light switch off with a tape measurer, there was never a dull moment.

While I really enjoyed working on the basement and getting to to see our team work together, the highlight of my week was definitely traveling offsite on Wednesday and getting to meet a new family. At the home where we worked there was a grandmother and 5 kids. When we walked in, we were greeted by the grandmother and two of the kids. From the start, we could see how happy they were to have us there. We played lots of games with them and I personally spent a lot of time with the little girl and formed a special connection with her. Going in we knew that this family and these kids had seen struggle and that there were parts of their lives that had been broken. Reflecting back on our time at that house, I felt that we were there not only there to share God's love, but to show that we could be a very small piece to cleaning up that brokenness. The way that we transformed their garage made me feel that we had made a difference. By the end, all of the shattered glass and car parts were removed and in my mind these parts represented the pain and hurt this family had gone through. By cleaning out the garage, we were showing them that their struggles did not define them and that we, or more importantly God, could give them a clean slate. I was more than thankful to be placed on that worksite and to have the opportunity to interact with and help this family.

Moving on from the work site, a huge part of these mission trips has been "seed thought" devotions and worship. It has given me the chance to spend time with my own thoughts, focusing on God, and growing in my faith. This week our topic was righteousness; righteousness with God, self, others, and creation. We defined righteousness as having a right relationship with God. The biggest take away that I had from these devotions was that God placed people, nature, and situations in our lives for a reason and learning to acknowledge and appreciate all He has done can help our relationship with Him grow. There was a moment in particular that really touched me. One night at worship, we were discussing leaning on others to help clean our relationship with God and the question "when did you accept Jesus into your heart and if not are you willing to do so?" came up. What happened next was truly remarkable. While I will not go into full details of what happened or could even begin to if I tried, I think all of us there can agree that God was in that room with a hand on all of our shoulders as emotions and tears flowed. That moment meant something different to each of us, but all of us were touched and I for one can say I will forever remember that moment.

You see, that is what I love most about these mission trips. Each year our group is brought closer together in ways that we have never been before. Being taken away from technology and spending time devoted to God and serving others has an inexplicable impact on us all. Sharing moments of laughter, frustrations, and event buckets of tears has brought us together as one. The connections that I have formed over these short 4 years are not going to be easy to say goodbye to, but what makes it easier is knowing that they will all be here along the journey and when I come home.

As I prepare to end this already long blog post, I want to touch on our last day of the trip when we went rock climbing and repelling. The highlight of that day was by far getting to the top of the harder rock wall. I had been trying to get to the top of the wall for about 20 minutes and was struggling to get passed a particular part of the wall. I kept trying different footholds and grips, but each time I would fall in the opposite direction and my body was soon growing tired. However, I made an agreement with myself that I was not going to give up and sure enough I finally made it to the top. I felt so accomplished as I was sitting at the top of the rock wall. It seemed pretty fitting that this happened on the last day of my last mission trip. To me it symbolized how far I have come as a person and in my faith. My ability to persevere is something that I have formed over the years and is a quality that I believe God has helped instill in me. As I continue to climb in my journey of faith, I will remember the moment when I reached the top of the wall and I will remember how the encouragement of the group helped me to get there. I am thankful for all of the leaders and all of the students who have been a part of this journey. No matter how big or small, each and every person has helped me grow to be the person that I am today. I will forever be thankful for all of the memories I have had on these mission trips and my time spent in youth group. - Nichole

Friday, July 27 - Adventure Day

Climbing

Hi! It's Marissa, Ian, and Julie. Today, we woke up extra early to begin our fun adventure day. We ate breakfast at 6:45 and immediately headed to Blue Heron. When we arrived, we found a beautiful view to do our morning devotional. Everyone really got to see God's creation in action! Afterwards, we then hiked towards our rock climbing spot for the day. We had two spots for climbing and a rope dangling off the top of a 100 foot cliff to repel! At first, people were reluctant and intimidated to do the activities, but after a while everyone jumped right "off!" The two climbing walls, one easy and one hard, were both quite a challenge. They included numerous cracks and crevices to pull yourself up to the top. When you got the top of each wall, it was a tradition to kiss the carabiner clip. Also, the cliff we repelled off was crazy! It was an awesome feeling getting to slowly back down and then hear the group cheering you on! Overall, it was a really fun and successful day! Everyone did something they probably thought they never would. We now are all tired and are in the vans heading to dinner at Sonny's for some good deserved barbecue! After dinner, we will be going to basecamp for our senior led worship. Then it will be bedtime so we are ready for the long car ride home tomorrow morning. See you guys soon.

Thursday, July 26 - Work Day 4

CleftRock

This is Luke Buzby, and I’m here to tell you about my day on Thursday, July 26th. So, Ben, Luke S. and I all went with Mr. Marcussen to clean up the trash we laid out on the sidewalk the previous day. We got in the car thinking this trip would take only an hour or so, but we were totally incorrect. We started bonding over songs and other weird things that I can’t even begin to explain. We started packing up the truck’s bed with trash that reeked. We then headed to the dump, but we got lost. We asked a neighbor that lived in the area of the dump who said that you take a left instead of a right. We did that but found a dead end and almost ran over a dog that was running circles around the car. We somehow got out of that and ended up finding the dump. Then we went to Lowe’s for supplies, and Luke and I broke the mission trip record with 136 inches of tape measure. We then got in the truck and headed back to base camp. When got back, Bethany, our Adventure Serve leader, told Luke and I to go look for a wood stretcher. We went out for a stroll and looked for this so called “wood stretcher.” Luke quickly caught on that we were looking around for something that didn’t exist for about 2 hours. It was a day of unexpected adventures. Our work has come to an end and looking forward to tomorrow's real adventure!

Wednesday, July 25 - Work Day 3

Hey! It's Jordan and Matt M. Today we went to a new worksite. The family had 5 kids that lived with their grandmother. In the morning, we played lots of games with the kids and really bonded with them. They also had 2 puppies and they were tiny and so adorable! I (Jordan) helped the grandmother with folding and hanging clothes! She was so sweet and very helpful! I, (Matt) played with the puppies a lot! We all then ate lunch together and had fun! We did a Walmart run and bought them new brooms and chairs and other things. After lunch, we got to work. We primed and painted the door frames with Hannah and Dan while Ben helped replace the toilet seat and Luke B, Luke S, and Clay cleaned the garage. It was very exhausting, but definitely worth seeing how happy they were. We were so lucky to have met these kid, and we really did a great job of showing them God's love. We ended the day with pictures and a big game of Duck Duck Goose. We were blessed to have met them and they definitely touched our lives.

Tuesday, July 24 - Work Day 2 with Grace and Sienna

WorkTeam

Today we were on a new worksite to do demo! Our mission was to tear down two sheds for a family that had just moved from Ohio to Kentucky. They shared that they had no family here in Kentucky so it was quite a leap of faith. Katie and I were chosen to be worksite leaders, which meant that we were in charge of telling people what to tear down and take to other places. I was pretty nervous because I was in charge of a project that I had never ever done before. While hammering through the tin roof of the shed, a bunch of ants that were crawling through the wood underneath. Pretty gross if you ask me! Throughout the day, I continued to think about our Seed Thoughts devotions this morning ... that we are beloved in God's eyes. God has chosen our own identity not by the things we do but from who we are. Despite always being consumed by other's judgements or trying to perfect our image, God loves us no matter what. - Grace

Today our worksite team helped out a couple that had just moved to Kentucky. They were in need of two sheds to be tore down. At first, I was definitely in my yellow zone as I literally had no idea what a crowbar was. Five minutes into our workday though, I was prying nails and tin off of the shed's roof. Towards the end of the day our group does debrief, and each of us share our lows and highs from the day. My work team is so fun and we have all grown closer to each other. It's amazing how close you can get with people after only spending just a few hours working together. Later at night we were able to meet the former directors of Cleft Rock and hear their story. God is working through all of us this week as we serve others and be the the hands and feet of Jesus. - Sienna

Monday, July 23 - Work Day 1

MattGivingOrders

Today was a great day! This is the 5th mission trip I have been on and honestly, every trip always feels like a brand new adventure. After meeting our Adventure Serve leaders last night, we spent today bonding with them during our work projects. Our Adventures Serve leaders (Heather, AJ, Cameron, and Bethany) split up our teams into 3 groups, each for a separate work project. My group was led by Heather, who in turn chose me to be the worksite leader. This means I was now in charge of tearing out a floor in someone's living room and replacing it. As someone who barely knows how to use a hammer, this was quite a challenge. Luckily I had a crew consisting of Ian, Darci, Julie, Jonathan, Conrad, Jake, and some of the leaders at my disposal. With their help, we managed to move the furniture (we had some trouble with the couch) and tore up the floor. God moved through us throughout the entire day and all 3 groups accomplished much more than anticipated. Overall, it was a good day and I think the team is really starting to bond.

After our annual team picture and prayer with Pastor Ron, our team hit the road at little after 6am Sunday morning. After a day of travel, gas stops, and lunch and dinner, our team arrived at Cleft Rock Retreat Center outside of the town of Mount Vernon in southeastern Kentucky. After we met our 4 Adventure Serve leaders, we played some get-to-know-you games and met for orientation as we discussed plans for our work site projects for the week. Then it was off to bed. Looking forward to a great work of service, growth, and relationship building.
